Day 5 of 16 · stake locked $15.00

In it together

16 apps, one $15.00 stake, 16 days. Each app is tested by the other 15, so up to 3 can leave and you still have 12.

Closed testing is easy to start and hard to finish.

Google changed how new apps reach production, and tester swaps appeared to fill the gap. Three problems keep coming up.

  • Google's rule is strict

A personal developer account created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 continuous days before it can apply for production. A tester who opts out and back in starts their 14 days again.

  • Leaving costs nothing

In a casual swap a tester can uninstall on day three with nothing to lose, and you only find out when the count drops. Apps also can't be found when the group is missing from the track, the release is still a draft, or one country is excluded.

  • Nobody can check

Many swaps run on self-reports. There is no way to know whether an app is really installed, from the Play Store, at a version that exists, or opened since. A tester who never touched your app looks the same as one who used it every day.

TestersGuild is built around those three failures.

How we do it

Four steps from a package name to a finished closed test. Every number below is what the product does today.

See the whole run, day by day

  1. Paste the package name and invite our service account in Play Console with one read-only permission. TestersGuild reads your closed testing track through the Play Developer API and cannot change your listing.

    read-only access

The add-an-app form: a package name field and an Add app button
  2. We confirm our Google Group is on your track, a release is out of draft, and every country on Google’s list is covered (about 177 today). If one is missing we say which, so no tester hits “app not found”.

    group · release · 177 countries

The app card marked Ready after the setup check passed
  3. A full cohort has an install phase (8 hours). Each member installs the other apps from the Play Store, and everyone sees a count like “11 of 16 ready”, never names. The cohort starts the moment every member has installed at least 13 of the 15 others. Anyone who does not is removed and a reserve is offered the seat.

installer · version code · 2 devices per app

Today: the apps this tester has installed, each with an Open button
  4. Every day, open at least 70% of your list for 30 seconds each. Every week, rate and write about 3 apps. The cohort runs 16 days, two more than Google asks, because people install on different days. Everyone locks a $15.00 stake, so leaving costs something.

What makes it hold

Each of these answers one of the three failures above.

Checked against Google Play

Before anyone is asked to install, we read your track and tell you exactly what to fix. Reading is all we do: the permission is read-only, per app. A pass means configured; an app turns verified only after real installs.

  • A live release on your track
  • The cohort group is on the track
  • All 177 reference countries are listed
  • Brazil is missing: testers there see "not found"

A stake that means it

$15

of credit locked when you join, given to you once, on us. Play fair and you get it back when the cohort finishes, and it pays your next one, so it is all you need to use the app free. It has no cash value.

Room for people who leave

Every app is tested by the other 15. That is 3 more than the 12 Google needs, so up to 3 can leave and every app still has 12.

Only real installs count

Phones report what they have installed. The server accepts it only if the installer is the Play Store, the version code was read from your track, and two different devices agree.

installer com.android.vending ok
versionCode 777821533 ok, read from your track
testers 2 distinct, 2 devices ok
status configured, then verified

A reserve list

Anyone can wait as a reserve with the same stake. When a member leaves or is removed, a reserve is offered the seat first and takes over the assignments.

Fair when things break

You are judged only on apps that pass the check, and your install clock starts once you are in the Google Group. A forfeited stake stays with us; credit never moves from one user to another.

One list a day

Today shows what to install, what to open and how far your check-in is. No searching Google Play.

What we ask of you

Read-only access to one app: you invite our service account with “View app information”. Never your Play Console password, never permission to publish. Sign-in is with your Google account.

Why this exchange holds

Most tester exchanges ask for nothing, so people leave. Here you put credit at stake and get it back by doing the work.

  1. 1

    Join

We give you $15.00 of platform credit, once per account and package, when your first app passes the setup check. It is your stake: you do not pay for it, and you get it back. Play fair and it is all you need to use the app free.

  2. 2

    Participate

Open 11 of the other 15 apps each day, and write a rated note on 3 apps each week.

  3. 3

    Stay accountable

Use is tracked on your phone. A missed day costs $1.00, 3 misses mean removal and the stake is forfeited.

  4. 4

    Complete

Members who are still in at the end get their stake back as credit, to use for a future cohort.

Platform credit can only be used inside TestersGuild. It cannot be withdrawn or converted to cash, and it is not earnings.

Try to break the 14 days

Google counts the testers who stay opted in. If the count falls under 12 on any day, the 14 days start again. Press Start, then tap testers to make them leave. Can you break it?

Who is testing your app?

12 people said yes. Nobody lost anything by saying it, and nobody is waiting to replace them.

The clock

One day passes every moment. Tap a tester whenever you like.

Real testers leave less often in a cohort, because leaving costs them their stake. This toy only shows what the extra 3 testers are for. Days lost to restarts: 0.

What leaving costs

The cost rises as other people start depending on you. Credit has no cash value: you cannot withdraw it or send it to anyone, it only pays stakes.

FormingNothingThe cohort is still filling. Leave and take your whole stake back, up to 3 times in a row. After that, join a cohort and stay until it starts to get 3 more.

Questions

Google’s rule

What exactly does Google require?

For a personal developer account created after 13 November 2023, a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 continuous days before you can apply for production. Google lowered the number from 20, so Google’s numbers can change. Check Google’s own help page, linked in the guides, before you rely on any of it.

Credit and the stake

What is the stake, and is it money?

Credit, not cash. The first time one of your apps passes the Google Play check you are given $15.00 of credit on us, once per account and once per package. You lock $15.00 as your stake when you join a cohort and keep it when the cohort finishes, so it pays for your next app too. It cannot be withdrawn or sent to anyone.

Testing day to day

What counts as installed?

Your phone reports what it has installed and the server checks it: the installer must be the Play Store and the version code must be one read from the owner’s track. Two different testers on two different phones make an app Ready.

Your app and Play Console

What access do you need to my Play Console?

Read-only access to one app: you invite our service account with the permission “View app information” and nothing more. We use it to read your closed track. We cannot edit or publish. Never your password, never permission to release. A one-tap “Connect Play Console” flow is coming; today you add the invite by hand.

Plans, availability and refunds

Is it free?

The swap is free: your first $15.00 of credit is a gift, you test fifteen apps and fifteen test yours. You only pay if you lose your stake and want to join again.

Built because testing shouldn’t be this frustrating

I built this after going through closed testing myself. Finding testers wasn’t the only challenge: unreliable participation, configuration mistakes and wasted time made the process harder than it needed to be. This is my attempt to make it more structured, transparent and dependable for other developers.

Be there when the first cohort opens

We are not open to the public yet. Leave your email and we will write once, when the first cohort is forming. The swap is free, and leaving a cohort before it starts costs nothing.
